GLCA New Directions

THE GREAT LAKES COLLEGES ASSOCIATION (GLCA) has a generous Mellon grant for funding explorations and projects of mid-career faculty (after tenure and before serious consideration of retirement) that allow them to explore areas outside their current expertise. In the first year of the program (2009-10) 104 awards involving 188 faculty members across twelve GLCA institutions were funded for a total of $638,000. The New Directions Initiative funds two levels of projects. An Exploration Proposal has maximum funding of $1000 and is intended to allow faculty members to look into a new area to see whether it provides a direction they would like to pursue further. A full proposal has no maximum funding, can provide up to $3,000 in stipend in the summer, and involves a more significant project, that can push the boundaries of faculty members’ experiences in ways that can positively affect their classrooms as well as their personal research.
